This walk is a mix of coastal cliff top walking with inland part of the loop following sunken ‘Devon’ lanes past ancient farmsteads. On reaching the South West Coast Path the walk becomes more strenuous as you traverse six deep valleys along the way.
The cliffs here are spectacular consisting of sedimentary rocks with the strata often being contorted and tilted upright into pinnacles and ridges leading out to sea. You will pass through two unusual sea-dissected valleys, where the erosion of the sea has broken through to a valley before the point that it originally met the sea. This enabled the river to take a more direct line to the sea, abandoning its original route, leaving a short section of dry valley. You will also see one of the best waterfalls to be visible on the entire South West Coast Path.
A leaflet of the walk has been produced by North Devon’s Hartland Peninsular Association. This leaflet has a detailed description of the route, along with information on the geology and history of the area, and can be viewed and printed by clicking on the ‘Printer friendly page’ button on the right.
