From the centre of Strete follow the main road northwards to the edge of the village and climb the stile into a pasture field. At the end of this field you cross the first of 2 new footbridges. This 15m long bridge was constructed off-site and then lifted into place using a mobile crane. Continuing onwards you soon arrive on a high plateau field with expansive views along the coast in both directions - Start Point, Torcross and Slapton Ley to the south and northwards to the Daymark at Froward Point and beyond. Moving on you come to the Landcombe Valley. Much thought was given to try and find an easy way to cross this steep valley, and we came to the conclusion that there isn’t one! We wanted to avoid long flights of steps, and the impact on the landscape and farming operations that a zig-zag path would create, and so the solution we decided on is to merely waymark it in a fairly straight line across the valley. Take it steady, stop to admire the views, and you will soon be across to the other side – it’s not as bad as it looks from the top. Crossing over the A379, it appears that you are moving away from the sea, but you are quickly rewarded with a great view down to Blackpool Sands below. Just before reaching Blackpool Sands you descend a flight of steps made of granite reclaimed from Bristol Docks. The material was chosen to match the surround of the memorial holm oak. The new packhorse bridge in front of you was designed to match the medieval road bridge, and like the road bridge has the year of construction carved on the downstream side. From Blackpool Sands the path steadily ascends through woodland, briefly runs along the footway of the A379 before following Old Road into Stoke Fleming. There is a regular bus service back to Strete, or turn this into a circular walk by returning using inland paths.
